Sport and Christianity

How do I Balance Ball Kicking and being active in prayer?

Do you have a passion for sports, but you wonder if it conflicts with your Christianity? Know that you can indeed be a devoted Christian and an athlete. Let’s explore how you can pursue your athletic pursuits while pursuing and living out your faith:

  1. Honor God in Your Sport: As a Christian athlete, you have the opportunity to glorify God through your athletic abilities and achievements. Whether you sit on the field, the court, or by the fishing waters, you can demonstrate integrity, sportsmanship, and excellence, which reflect the character of Christ. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” It is precisely in these high stress “zones” where being a Christian can be lived out powerfully and shamelessly – JUST DO IT!
  2. Balancing of Priorities: While sport can be a significant part of your life, it is essential to maintain a proper balance between your athletic pursuits and your relationship with God. Prioritize time spent in prayer, reading God’s Word, and participating in fellowship with other believers. Matthew 6:33 encourages us,” But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” The Bible is full of busy men and women who, in the midst of their busy schedules, keep plenty of time open to sit at Jesus’ feet – JUST DO IT.
  3. Maintain Integrity: In the competitive world of sports, it can be tempting to compromise your values for success. Yet, as a Christian athlete, you are called to maintain integrity and uphold biblical principles, even in the face of pressure or temptation. Proverbs 10:9 reminds us, ” Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.” Win or lose, do not give up Christian principles – JUST DO IT.
  4. Use Your Platform Right: As an athlete, you have a unique platform to positively influence others. Whether it is through your actions on the field, your interactions with teammates and opponents, or your involvement in your community, you can be a light for Christ. 1 Peter 2:12 encourages us to “Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.” JUST DO IT
  5. Find Identity in Christ: Remember – your identity is not found in your athletic achievements, but in your relationship with Jesus Christ. No matter how successful or unsuccessful you may be in sports, your value and usefulness is based in the fact that you are a child of God. Philippians 3:8 reminds us, “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ” JUST DO IT.

As you continue to pursue your passion for sports, pursue the goal of obtaining the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. May you do it with a heart that is dedicated to honouring God in everything you do. May you find joy, fulfilment, and purpose in using your athletic abilities to glorify His Name.
